New Programmes

The Marton Athletic Club is out with a most attractive programme for its annual sports meeting to bo he(J £>p! Monday, March 18th—the day oil which St. Patrick’s holiday will hg observed in Marton and neighbouring towns. It will be seen that liberal prizes are being offered, forming a programme that should find much favour with athletes, cyclists and honeowners. Amongst the items in the cycle races is a two-mile wheel race of £ls and other events to suit the tastei of the most fastidious. The only alteration of note in the running events is the withdrawal of long distance races in favour of sprint events which prove to be more attractive and popular with the public and appreciated by the majority of runners who are to he depended on to make a sports meeting a success. In the horse events it wiQ be seen that the Ladies Jumping.ComM petition has been deleted from 1 the programme, but the other event* all well endowed and should agqiji attract large entries. The o’ommittcp intend to put forth its best energies tg make the sports a great success, and Eg far everything is going along smoothly, Affairs relating to the tracks wiU receive careful attention and it wifi net be owing to any lack of interest a»4 intelligent labour if the circuit; and running track are not as good g sup, face to ride and run on as af any of the leading centres.

The Awahuri Sports programme is published to day. This popular meetmg will take place on Saturday, March 16th, and seventeen events are set down for decision. No change has been made in the value of prizes, but it will be noticed that a half-mile handicap has been included in the programme. Amongst the best endowed of the open events are the St, Patrick’s Handicap of three 1 events (100, 220aa<l 440 yards), Awahuri'Cycle Handicap ot £0 os and Hunters’ Leaping Competition of £8 8s cash prize and cup valued £lO 10s, and second and third trophies valued £4 4s. No effort will be spared to make tbit meeting ’a big success and it is to bo’hoped that residents of ilia district will do What They can to help it along. The date on which nominal tions close is March 9,th.

Considerable interest is being taices in the Eikau Athletic Claims Sports, which are'to be held in Mr Baltner’i paddock on Tuesday next, 22nd inst.
