FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the above was held last evening. Present —Mr J. B, Trewin (Mayor), Crs Fitzherbort, Dunlop, Harford, West, Bnrne, Williams, P. Thomson, and A. Thompson.
Messrs Bell, Gully, and Cooper, Palmerston, wrote stating that they were willing to accept £3O in full settlement of Mr Webster’s claim. —The Council could not entertain the proposal, and tho letter was handed to tho borough solicitor to reply to that effect.
The same firm wrote on behalf of Mr E. J. lliddiford,‘‘complaining that the water was cut off from his Cheltenham property at Christmas, resulting in damage to his Council decided tp reply stating that the water was cut off owing to a break in the main, and the matter would be rectified as soon as possible. The Palmerston Brass Band asked permission to give a sacred concert in the Oval on Sunday next, wdiich was granted. The acting-engineer reported that tw r o chains of Ko, 5 funnel had caved in. Also that the timber was rotten when put in, A small washout took place at the Kiwitea Bridge, which can bo repaired at a small cost.
In discussing plans for extending tho water and soworago mains, tho Mayor explained that tho Council was not in a position to proceed with the work now, and if this work was to be carried out it would havo to bo decided by the popular veto of the ratepayers.
The question of lighting the Borough also came up for discussion, and it was suggested that electric light would ho cheaper. The matter was left to tho lighting committee to obtain all possible information, ' • Mr S. Andrew waited on tho meeting and complained of thp state of the new footpath formation in Kimbolton Eoad, this being a similar complaint to that made by other residents a short time ago. The matter was left to the Engineer. A motion and two amendments were put ip and l° s t regarding the appointment of the engineer, and a second motion was ruled out of order by the Mayor. Some animated debates took place, after which it was decided "That the Town Clerk write to Messrs M. Biddies and Eodgers, asking them to forward their testimonials and qualifications, and that Mr Harding be appointed acting engineer until nest meeting.
