LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
Snt, —In your report of Cosmopoiitsß cricket match y. Marton Club I notifl some ill-advised remarks re umpirinH Before going further I may point ol that I had already arranged with tIH Cosmopolitan''secretary that I dvas'H umpire on this occasion. vVhile quiH agreeing with jour reporter (who quotfl A. G. Steele on umpires) 're the ul pleasant duties pertaining to that posH tion I, as one of the umpires wIH volunteered my humble service? aifl have played the game since 1856,pr0)H ably from ray very lengthy experiemH know a good deal more about the ganjH than your cricket reporter. UndH these circumstances it is hardly noceH sary to say that with so many years bat and ball such comments as a]H peiired in reference to the match iH question were, in my opinion, uncalleH for and objectionable “ ad absurdum.fl During the first innings the Eev. FatheH Molloy and myself umpired for thfl Cosmopolitan C,C. and the senior Cluo respectively. I can certainly assure your reporter than none of the vagaries as stated occurred during our term of duty. I remained until the termination of the first innings, when Mr F. C. Wilson kindly undertook ray position at my request. As to how.'my successor subsequently carried out his duties, I am unable to say, having left the ground.—t am, etc., J.' 0. FtrtTpjf.
