Word has been received at Stratford that Whangamomona Dairy Factory was totally destroyed by fire last night. The London Daily Mail states that the Prophet Dowie has become a raring maniac, and is under the delusion that he is a famous soldier. . It is the desire of the Bishops of the Province, says the Church Chronicle, that no clergyman be married within . three years of his ordination to the j diaconate. ] Napier Borough Council have decided to invite applications from electrical engineers to advise them as to a tramway and lighting scheme suitable for Napier. On receipt of the engineer’s report Council will invite offers for the rights. Billington, the English swimmer, defeated Bead by 3 feet in a 300 yards race at Brokenkill. The time was 3min 64sec. James Stanbury, the sculler, who has left Wanganui for Sydney, has expressed his intention of returning and taking up his residence in Wanganui. Marton Band will give another open air concert in the Park this evening, commencing at 7.80. The Band wish to acknowledge a donation of £2 2s towards their funds from St. Stephen’s Vestry. It is reported from Seatoun that some industrious user of mussel-bait for sea-fishing found a mussel in which ho discovered a pearl. Though the value of the gem is stated to be only 10a, it is said that residents of the seaside village are quite excited, and are talking about a new industry. A detachment of the Adelaide medical corps who competed at Christchurch, complain that in the bearer competitions they had to meet immediately after completing the first round, a Christchurch team who had had a good spell. They also allege that the doctors and judges were all Christchurch men. Possibly a record period of secretaryship has been established by Mr Thomas McKenzie, a well-known and highly respected resident of Welling- j ton. Mr McKenzie to-day resigns the j secretaryship of the Widow and Orphans’ Society, in connection with the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, which ho has held for 58 years. Mr ' McKenzie, who formerly owned the newspaper Independent (now the N.Z. Times), resigns on account of ago. The Japanese General Nogi, who was one of the most renowned commanders in the late war, has invented a new type of artificial hand, by which its holder is able to pick up ordinary articles, and even to carry a cup to his i mouth. The Mikado and Mikasa have warmly thanked the General for this proof of his sympathy with crippled soldiers and others. Mr Percy Forking (late of the firm of Nixon, Bad delay & Forlong) has opened i up-to-date offices as land, estate and financial agent, three doors above the Wanganui Post Office and opposite the Rutland Hotel. The practical experience Mr Forlong has had in sheep and cattle country should prove of great value to clients. A list of some of his properties appears in another column. At the Taihape Court W. A. Fraser and Elizabeth Fraser were each
chargsd with selling grog at Turangerere, not being the holder of a license, to one James Lee on November 18. Fraser was fined £3O and 7s costs and
Elizabeth Fraser was fined £1 and 7s costs. John Dasler, on a similar charge, was fined the same amount as Fraser, in default one month’s imprisonment.
The total value of lauded estates m the colony at the end of last year, as shown by the Government valuation roll, was £218,000,000. Of this £81,000,000 represented the value of improvements. During 1906 one hundred and ninety-five local district subdivisions, throughout the colony, were revalued, and the total increase in capital values in these districts amounted to £21,000,000. A horse has died in Erskinville, New South Wales, from a somewhat peculiar cause. The animal was in a paddock, and on the owner going for it he found it lying dead. There was a wound on the side of the nock, and from appearances around the horse had evidently bled to death. The police investigated the matter, and reported that the horse hud rolled upon a sharp piece of glass, which had made a gash in its neck, and that it had bled to death. The glass — a three-cornered piece—exactly fitted the wound.
A denizen of the wild and woolly back-blocks of Southland recently visited Timaru, says the Post, and was taken to the harbour by a Timaru friend, who, with much honest pride, pointed out the new Dredge 350, which was working alongside the old breakwater. The man from way-back gazed stolidly at the big machine for a very long while, and his friend at last suggested that they come away. “Not yet,” was the reply, “I’ve counted 364 of those buckets come up out of the sea since I’ve been here, and I’m not going till they get the lot up!”
In connection with the statement that a large quantity of South Australian grapes would be shown at the Christchurch Exhibition, it appear* that Signor Bragato, the Government
viticulturist, intends to make a display of Now Zealand grapes at the same time, with a view to showing that the locally-grown article in the matter of flavour and price can compete with the imported. The grapes to be di*played will be selected from the Government experimental farms in the Waikato and Hawke’s Bay, and also from prominent New Zealand growers. The vintage this year promises to be a record.
An exciting incident occurred yesterday morning on the Waihi Gold Mining Company’s line at Waihi. Three small timber trucks escaped from No. 1 shaft, and sped at a terrific rate along the down-grade, through the town, gathering momentum every yard. The engineer of an engine approaching from Waikino with 30 empty iron quartz trucks sighted the runaway trucks about a quarter of a mile away coming towards him. Anticipating a serious collision, he immediately reversed his engine, and went full speed astern. The runaway trucks, which were going about a mile a minute, however caught up to the train below the Tauranga crossing, but, under the circumstances, the impact was only slight, and practically no damage was done. By the engineer’* presence of mind a serious accident was averted.
A systematic investigation, »ays the Times, is now to bo made into the economic value of cool curing cheese. Messrs Singleton and Grant, of the Dairy Commissioner’s staff, are at Dale Sold cheese factory to investigate the experiments there being conducted. The company has a properly constructed cool-curing room and artificial refrigeration power, and tho Government is supplying the expert supervision, so that authentic data may be available as to what extent the shrinkage of cheese is affected and what effect curing at a low temperature has on the flavour. There i* probably no one in the business who will deny that cool curing improves cheese quality and reduces the shrinkage, but what is not generally admitted is that the improvement compensates for the expense. This is what Mr Singleton and liis assistant will endeavour to prove. Tho experiment will be followed by New Zealand cheesemakers with considerable interest.

The steamer Stormbird, while enter* ng the channel at midnight last night, was caught by a strong flood current and earned aground just inside the bar. This morning ten tens of coal were jettisoned, and -the vessel was lifted and brought to Wanganui. . It is thought no serious damage has been sustained.
, Mr F, J. Dignan, manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Masterton, has been promoted to the post of manager at Ashburton.
It is stated by a contemporary that the 21 gentlemen who showed their patriotism in a practical way by guaranteeing the expenses of the Marl- ] borough court at the New Zealand I Exhibition, to the extent of £l.O each, ■ are to receive from the Government . authorities some tangible recognition of their action. Does this mysterious utterance mean that the subscribers ■ are to be added to the Upper House. | or only that they are to be made J s.P.? j Though they were opened but a ■ month ago, the shelters at the Seddon : Hospital for Consumptives, recently erected near the Wellington Hospital, are already full. Fifteen patients eight males and seven females occupy these elevated sanctuaries, aad the hospital trustees have just had to refuse another applicant. There will be more room when the Otaki shelters are open, and that event should not now be long delayed. The Otaki institution is under the adminstration of the Wellington Hospital Board.
