THE TRAINING SHIP.
Per Press Association. Wellington, January 10. Regulations in connection with the appointment of staff and enrolment of boys on tho New Zealand training ship Amokura are gazetted to-night. Applications must bo made by tho parent or guardian of the candidate, accompanied by a written consent to his enrolment, and, on the candidate being enrolled, an undertaking must lie given that he will not bo removed from the vessel (unless dismissed) for a period of two years, or for such period as the minister may determine. Boys will, on acceptance, bo received on probation. The period of probation will bo one week, should a hoy then bo found unsatisfactory in any respect, he will bo immediately discharged. Boys found satisfactory will then bo enrolled and the necessary kit( issued. No boy will be allowed, while in tho service, to wear clothing other than that supplied to him on the training ship. Tins condition will also apply to boys when on leave. In order to qualify boys are to take service in cither the British navy or the mercantile marine on completion of their training in the training ship Tho minimum age at entry is fixed at 13 years and a half, and the maximum at I t years and a half. Both of these limits of ago may be varied at the discretion of the Minister. The period of service on the training ship shall not bo loss than 18 months nor more than two years, at the discretion of the Minister. On enrolment every boy will bo rated as a “ second class boy.” Tho sum of one penny per day will bo placed to his credit in tho books of tho training ship from the date of final acceptance. On his being raised to tho rank of “ first class boy,” which-iinty not take place until ho has completed at least six months’ service, his pay will, if tho Minister approves, be raised tfj'twopcnco per day. On receipt of one “ good conduct” stripe, which should not take place until lie lias completed at least 1 year’s service, his .pay may, if the Minister so approves, be further increased to the amount of 3d per day. On being promoted to tho rank of “petty officer,” which should not take place until ho has completed at least fifteen months’ service, his pay, if the Minister may so approve, will bo further increased by an additional Id per day. Leave will lie granted twice a year, i.e., twonty-on<> days at midsummer and fourteen days in midwinter, in all thirty-five days, subject to good conduct.
