BOWLING.

Masterton Tourney,

Per Press Association. Masterton, January 9.

The bowling tournament was continued \ in beautiful weather to-day. j i Seventh round : This round was 1 started pimctually at 9 o’clock, the (weather being all that a bowler could wish. In the various matches played some very interesting heads were contested and great interest was centred in Te Kau and Greenmeadows, who so far are unbeaten. The final will probably fee played out between these two clubs, who are leading in their sections. The surprise of the day s play was Karori who easily defeated Newtown, and the Hutt were badly beaten by Petone. Great things were expected of Masterton, who had only lost one game. They however failed to keep pace with Carlton, who were returned the winners by 25 against 16. Carlton started to load from the first head and increased it to 8 against 1 at the fourth, giving Ma> terton seven to pull. Both teams at the eighth head were nine all. Masterton failed to get in during the next six heads. This gave their opponents a lead of 10. Curing the seventeenth head some fine play was seen. Carlton were lying 1 near tbe jack, when J. Cochrane with his last ball carried the jack, leaving his opponents 2. J, Whittaker, the Masterton skip, went back and , played a draw, and knocked on, getting in 1 for bis side. In tbe twentieth head Carlton pulled 4, making their total 20. The next head gave 1 to Masterton, the game ending Carlton 23, Masterton IC. The Carlton skip, J. Kilgour, played a splendid game. At the twelfth head '* Masterton wore lying 1 close to the jack, when he played a drive, and carrying the jack got the shot. Te Kan met Feilding and, from the start, the game was of an interesting ). order. They were level at the 4th head, 3 each. Te Bau got away and at the 10th head, were 10 up against their 5. The next head was as played in Feilding s favour, who scored five again, bringing their score level, ten each. The skip, A. J. Massey, of To Bau, was playing one of 5 the best games on the green. At tbe 13tb bead this skip layod a splendid long head drive. His opponents were laying 4 when he out out the jack with ids first and lay the shot by his 2nd. Feilding ' team after this head seemed to go to pieces, their ‘scores during the next 7 heads only registering two single, whilst ’ the Te Bau team playing well together, increased their score to 21, finally winning

by G. . The game between Victoria and Groytown was evenly contested. The former team started to score from the first head and kept the lead up to the 13th head when Grey town drew level, 15 each. Groytown eventually won by 28 to 23. A point was raised by No. 3 of 1 ictoria team in regard to the handling of the jack after it is in the trench. The rule of the Northern Bowling Association reads as under:—“When the jack is run into the ditcli by a bowl in the rogiila* course of the game the place where it rests must be marked and tbe jack placed on the edge of the green so that the succeeding player may see where to play to.
