The Pope, owing to the separation law, has relinquished the portion of “ Peter's pence ” collected in France amounting to £20,000 sterling per annum, ' [Peter’s pence is an annual tribute of one penny paid at the feast of St. Peter to the See of Rome. It was collected in England from 740 till it was abolished by Henry VIII.]
