rpHE BEST TIME-KEEPER YOU EVER CARRIED from G. SHORT, CHEAPSIDE,” FEILDISG. 11in iniii rtf A THIEF’S STRATAGEM. A man from (he country had the unpleasant experience the other day m London of losing a valuable watch. The watch was safe in Oxford street, but when ho got to Piccadilly it was gone from its chain. Like many people placed in similar circumstances he compounded a felony and offered a reward to the thief if he returned the watch. The two met, and the watch was handed over. The visitor asked the thief how the trick had been done. He was absolutely unconscious of any contact with a passer-by, ''Well, guv’nor,” said the man, edging up to his victim, “ I don’t mind tellin’ yer. Do you remember when you was lookin’ at a picture in Agnew’s shop you felt something touch you on the left ear ? You turned round and snicked at it with your right hand. At that moment, your elbow bein’ up, I from the right-hand side put my hand in your pocket and sneaked the watch.’’ Delighted with the ingenuity of the trick and the frankness with which it was ditclosed, the man from the country gave the thief an extra halfcrown and went off chuckling. When he had gone some htlie way he put his hand in his pocket for the treasured watch, and found it empty. At the moment when the thief, having approached his victim, was explaining his trick, he stole the watch again. RINGING UP THE KAISER. When Henry Schmidt, a German } schoolboy at Honef, heard that the j Kaiser intended to visit that town he said to his classmate, “ Here is a chance for a holiday. I will arrange it.” Instead of wasting effort and paper in writing to court ■ officials Henry went to the public telephone I office and rang up the Schloss i Sohaumberg. in Bonn, where the Kaiser was staying. “Hello,” he said, “is this the Schloss Sohaumberg ? It is. Well, kindly ask his Majesty to come to the telephone, Henry Schmidt wishes to speak with him.” Not dreaming anybody but an intimate friend would dare call up the War Lord, a Court messenger sought his Imperial Majesty, who at once went to the telephone. The Kaiser’s feelings can be imagined when he learned that the person who so peremplorily wished to speak to him was a schoolboy of Honef, hut the Emperor’s sense of, humour came to his aid and he listened to the boy’s petition. The next day he sent one of his chamberlains with a message to Henry saying that the school was to have a holiday when bo visited Honef. BEAUTIFUL HAIR! CAPILU HAIR TONIC.
