fJIHB BEST TIME-KEEPER YOU EVER CARRIED from G. SHORT, “ CHEAPSIDE," FEILDING. WOMEN SHOT AT CRONSTADT. Nothing could better illustrate the reientlesa policy of the Russian authorities in their endeavour to crash the revolutionary spirit than the story told by Reuter’s St. Peters- j burg correspondent in a letter of the last hours of the two women Mamai-1 eff and Venediktoff, who were condemned to death by court-martial for their implication in the conspiracy to kill, by means of a bomb outrage, Count Adlerberg, commandant of the Gronstadt fortress, and the members of the court-martial then sitting to try the sailors and others concerned in the recent revolt. It was reported at the time of the execution that no hangman could be found for the two women, and, as it now transpires,, they were shot by a detachment of troops. Mamaieff, who played a comparatively small part in the plot, refused to make any statement in court—in her own words, she was firmly resolved to “ boycott j such a tribunal." [ The execution was carried out twelve hours after the death sentence had been pronounced. The t\o women were confined in a small cell; they met their fate bravely, and spent a great part of the night singing. Mamaieff wrote out a telegram to her mother asking her to come to Gronstadt for a last farewell, but the message was not dispatched by the authorities. Veneditktoff’s mother, an old sempstress, living at Tamboff, travelled to Gronstadt, whan her daughter was arrested, but in spite of all her entreaties did not succeed in having an interview with her. Both the women refused the services of the priests who came to offer the last consolations of the Chureh. In her final letter written to her mother Venediktoff said: “I can | hear a noise in the passage, the ■ tramp of soldiers. I am now perj haps about to die. Good-bye, goodI bye, my dear mother." j At half-past four in the morning the women were informed that they had to leave for the place of execution. They begged that they might be permitted to wear their ordinary clothes, and not be compelled to don the white garb of the condemned. Their request was refused. On arriving at the scene of execution they found three of their accomplices already there. All the five were bound to stakes, and a party of dragoons advanced towards them. The shots rang out; four of the prisoners fell dead at the first volley. Mamaieff, however, was only wounded in the leg, and by some means managed to detach the bandage from her eyes and gaze at her companions. Then came a second volley. She dropped lifeless, and a few minutes afterwards the bodies were thrown into the sea.
