The seismograph at tho Observatory recorded two violent tremors on Wednesday and Saturday last. There were indications that it occurred on tho south-east coast of Africa or iu Central India. Bearing on tho second record, the Eastern Extension officer at Eodngez, about 380 miles from Mauritius, informed the officer at Cocos Island that the sea was boiling at Eodngez, and small tidal waves were being experienced. Later on the water rose higher than has been known before, and boats had to be hauled up out of danger. After rising for two hours the sea receded.
An earthquake was felt at Marion on Saturday at midnight, and telegrams from Pahiatua and Blenheim state that it was also observed there.
