FIRES.

Per Press Association. Ashburton, January 4. About ten o’clock this morning, shortly after the first express for the South hail passed, the roof of ganger Elliott’s house on the railway'reserve near Dromore, was observed to be on fire. The, house and most of the furniture was destroyed. As the fire commenced on the roof it is surmised that a spark from the engine of the express was the cause. The furniture was uninsured. The house belongs to the Railway Department. On account of the very dry season, there have been several grass fires in the district recently. Yesterday a plantation adjoining the racecourse was destroyed by fire; and on Wednesday, a fire gutted the County Council’s plantation near Fairfield.
