LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

To-morrow (Saturday), January 2!itb, is the anniversary of the Aucle land Province. . The Onewhero Athletic Club's sports t?ke place in Mr. J. Cathcart's paddock, Onewhero, to-morrow.

A meeting will be held in the Methodist Church this evening' to farewell Mr. and Mrs. F. Q Day. Mr. Day has been appointed headmaster of the public school at Rawene.

The chairman of the School Committee (Mr. Frank Perkins) has received a number of applications from parents of children residing some distance from Pukekohe, who intend attending the local High School, for board for five clays in the week., Anyone having vacancies for school boys

and girls are requested to communicate with Mr. Perkins immediately. I On Tuesday next the "Times" will j appear in an'entireiy new form. Ihe title will be changed to*the more concise and comprehensive, one of " The Franklin Times,," and the paper will consist of eight pages. For some considerable time the management has been concerned at the inability to find room for important news matter and at the same time*al!ow advertisers the space they required. The position has been grappled with and the "Times" takes on quite a new i lease of life from Tuesday next.

" It is becoming unsafe for peop.c to walk along the footpath in King Street," said a '.veil-known business man to a Times" reporter this morning. " Only yesterday a lady was walking along and was nearly knocked over," he continued. Inquiring as to the trouble, the pressman was informed that the lives of the public were considerably endangered by the number of "scooters" used in King Street by children. Day after day it is a common occurrence to see about twenty of these nuisances parading along the main thoroughfare of the town as well as the footpaths. Not only are people's lives in danger, but th 'youngsters' lives are also in thenhands. They freauently use the street in spite of the heavy traffic, and perhaps if a scooter and kid collided with a motor car and the child killed the ear driver would be apprehended and charped with manslaughter. The matter is or.e tfor Ihe Borough Council to take up and put a stop to before an accident happens.
