TUESDAY, JANUARY 25th, 1921. THE HOUSING PROBLEM.
“Wc nothing extenuate, nor aught set down in malice.”
During the discussions by the Mannrewa Town Board last evening lie’ matter of housing was brought forward by Mr, Pegler, This gentleman had just returned from a trip to Wellington and was vary much impressed at the vigorous manner in which tho Government is erecting cottages for workmen in various suburbs of that city. But what astonished Mr. Pegler more than anything else was that the contrast between Auckland and Wellington should bo so marked in thi* matter of Government houses. All around Wellington, what were practically garden villages were springing up, and around Auckland nothing was being done. Now, it must be admitted that nowhere in tlye Dominion is the hous-
Pukekohe. In some cases it is even difficult to fill business positions simply because applicants cannot secure housng. The progress of the town is, therefore, being retarded through this serious problem, and an effort should be made to remedy the position, perhaps on the lines of Government assistance, as at Wellington. It is quite certain that many people who would make good citizens for Pukekohe cannot purchase.houses under the present system and their usefulness is therefore lost to the town. Probably an expression on the matter could bo got from the Prime Minister while he is in Pukekohe next week, Jt is cortaianly time that something really practical was done to ease the present very unsatisfactory condition of things.
