PUKEKOHE ATHLETIC SPORTS.
INAUGURAL MEETING. A HUGE SUCCESS. The' inaugural meeting, under the auspices of the Pukekohc Athletic Club, took place on Saturday o.i the Domain in the presence of an attendance of about 1500, Threatening climatic conditions prevailed, and this considerably affected the attendance, which undoubtedly would have been larger had there been brilliant sunshine. In spite of this, however, visitors were present from all parts of the district. Elaborate arrangements were complete, and the officials worked assiduously to make the gathering an unqualified success and from all accounts their ch.iect was achieved The events were got of
well to time, and some enjoyaoie running, chopping and dancing events were witnessed. The handicapping in the running and chopping was excellent, and reflected great credit on the respective handicappers. Close finishes were an outstanding feature throughout the day. The weightguessing competition attracted riucn attention, the whole of the tickets being disposed of. The pig will be slaughtered on Thursday next and the actual weight will be announced ir the “Times” on Friday. It is expected that the funds oi the club will be considerably augmented as a result of the sports | meeting. Results are as follows: — Athletic Events.
