MACHINE TO DETECT LIARS.

An apparatus by which jf is possible to detect liars has been invented by Dr. Augustus D. Waller, F.R.S., of the London University. This is done by taking electric records of the effect of cross-examination on a criminal's, nervous system to indicate whether lie is telling the truth. Dr. Waller discovered that the resistance of the skin to electricity varies with the state of the emotions, and has so developed the discovtry (,hat even ;ioprehension can plainly foe "spotted" by the fluctuations of a spot of light on a scale. "This," lie says, "is Junv we shall get the criminal, Jfe vvill be UyUig to prove an alibi, *i# will look the judge in the eye. and hay lie way never, bay. at Chelsea, ii* his life. Now we upply my method. Attach the electric wireb to his handfc and then show him a few pictures, including one of the places the criminal was suspected to have visited. The others will give negative results, but when he is shown 4-Jiq-t particular one the, result will be that the light will jump—and there is no power in mortal man to stop it."
