'' TUAKAU.

The Tuakau Town Board has been successful in raising £3OOO, balance of the 1917 Tuakau Town Board special loan of £12,000, from the Public Trust Office. Permission was obtained to raise the money at the ruling rate of interest, namely 5H per cent. The loan was originally authorised at 5% per cent. TOWN HALL LOAN.

The board is still endeavouring to secure a loan of £7OOO for the purpose of erecting a municipal hall. GEORGE STREET WORKS. The contractor, Mr. G. W. Singleton, is making good progress with the formation work in George Street, jiear the Catholic church. Providing the weather remains fine the work should be shortly completed. CRICKET MATCH. The cricket season was opened on Wednesday last, when a president's team met a vice-presidents' team. The former eleven made 29 runs, while the latter responded with 86 runs, The winners, captained by Mr. W. Barnaby, won by 57 runs. Mr Dynes Fulton was skipper of the defeated team. Afternoon tea provided by the ladies was duly appreciated.

A social and dance was held In the hall in the evening under the auspices of the Cricket Club, and proved an unqualified success. Music was • contributed by Morrow's orchestra, while Messrs. S. Conelly and J. W. Lonergan discharged the duties of M's.C. in a thoroughly efficient manner.

PRESENTATION

At the cricketers' social on Wednesday, opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr. Fred Pivott, who has left the district and who has taken over a business at Paeroa. During his residence at Tuakau Mr. Pivott took a keen interest in all kinds of sports, especially football and cricket. He was captain of the Tuakau senior football team, and was the means of keeping the team together during the season. He was an able footballer and highly esteemed by all with whom he came in contact. As a mark of the esteem in which he was held he was thf recipient of a beautiful solid leather travelling bag suitably inscribed. Mr. Jim Rogers was presented with a medal for the best all-round junior footballer.

PAPAKURA.

TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last evening to consider tenders for various works. There were present: Messrs. S. Evans (;:cting-chairnian), D. W. Jones, J. Rea, T. D. Campbell, E. D. McLennan and the clerk (Mr. A. L. Cooper).

Three tenders were received for the cartage of reticulation pipes within the Town Board's district, in connexion with the water supply scheme, and Mr. E. C. Johnston was the successful tenderer at 6s per ton for pipes, 7s 6d a ton for the cartage of sundries, and 10s 6d a ton for cartage of cement, etc, to the head works.

Tenders were also invited for formation work on the Great South Road from the Broadway intersection to the police station, from Chappel Street to Clarke Road, Marne Road and Settlement Road, but no tenders were received. In this direction the board has done all in its power to have the various works put in hand, but wnthout success. SOLDIERS' ..WAR MEMORIAL.

There was an attendance of only nine at the meeting of residents held in connexion with the matter of the erection of a war memorial to perpetuate the memory of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. It was decided to call a meeting of residents for Thursday, December 16, at 8 p.m. in the picture hall. The Town *Board was requested to submit recommendations as to the most suitable form the memorial should take. See advertisement in this issue.
