DR. BARNARDO'S WORK.
GENERAL REPORT.
DISTRICT EFFORTS.
The half-yearly box-opening in con-j nexion with the Young Helpers' League took place on Saturday afternoon, November 20, at the Pukekohe District High School. Afternoon tea was provided by the president, Mrs. Wake, the vice-jresi-dent, Mrs. McArthur, and a committee of ladies consisting of Mesdames Bockett, Waters, R. Wilkinson, Eva Wilkinson, R. Brownlee, T. Brownlee, Perkins, Potter, Mellsop, Russell, and Johns, and the children did full justice to the dainty and bountiful repast. Two of the members, Misses Alice and Rewa Johns, are to be congratulated on the success of their efforts to raise more money for the orphans in Dr. Barnardo's Homes. They made and collected a large number of articles, with which they decorated a fine Christmas Tree. This won the admiration of one and all, and a ready sale was found for the goods. The proceeds of the sale amounted to £3 0s 3d. As this is the first effort of the kind attempted by the League, it his hoped the success achieved will inspire others to follow their example. During the afternoon Miss Hewlett, who kindly came from Drury to assit, organised games for the children, and these were greatly enjoyed.
The amount taken from the boxes was £ls 15s the largest sum collected during any half-year. These sums, together with a donation of 10s and about £2 paid in subscriptions for the coming year, amount to over £2l, which will shortly be forwarded to Miss R. Morton, England.
