ORDINARY MEETING.

Tlio ordinary meeting of the PukekoiiC Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr. C. K. Luw ie). and Crs. G. H. Armstrong, D. R. Hamilton, K. H. McGcugh, J. h. ,-.eith, •-. J. Morrow, J. Patterson, R. fiilkey and the clerk, Mr. J. F. Deane, electrical enginee. - (Mr. W. Wyatt), :nd the foreman (Mr. S. Clews). Proposed Scenic Reserve. Roose's Bush.

With regard to the council's application for a grant to enable the purchase of Roose's Bush for scenic reserve and recreation purposes, the Prime Minister wrote informing the council that from an official report on the matter, it appeared that the land in question was very suitable for a "domain, and the price of £IOO an acre was considered reasonable. The report, he added, was not received in time to have the application considered before Parliament adjourned, and therefore he regretted the question of providing a subsidy to assist in the acquisition of the lend must stand over in the meantime, as all moneys must be appropriated on the Estimates. If the council would remind him of the application some time prior to next session, of Parliament he would be pleased to again go into the matter. It was decided! to reply thanking the Premier for his action in the matter.

On the motion of Cr. Armstrong, it was decided to" convene a meeting of ratepayers for the purpose of explaining the matter fully. A poll on the proposal will be taken on Wednesday next. Donation to War Memorial.

The Franklin County Council forwarded a cheque for £lO towards the erection of a memorial in memory of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice. The council suggested that the names of soldiers who resided in the county area adjacent to the borough, and who looked upon Pukekohe as their home town, should be included in the list of names inscribed on the proposed memorial.

The clerk reported having replied, stating it was originally intended to accede to the council's suggestion. It was agreed to ask the county to supply the list of names.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Cemetery.

The Cemetery Committee reported as follows:

That the present charge of £2 for enclosing each section of S by 4 in and that in future a charge of 5 per cent, on the cost of enclosing graves and erecting tombstones be made. All graves already enclosed to be exempt from any further fee; (2) all graves owned by absentee owners be covered with concrete; (3) witer pipes b-3 extended to the shed; (4) gates to be painted and hedges to be trimmed. The report was adopted. Works.

The Works Committee reported that the formation work on Nelson Sticet had been completed. The pipe drain recently authorised war well on the way to completion. Metal spawls were being hauled by traction engine from Mr. U. Keane's to the Mr.nukau-Bucklam! road. The tcam.at present were engaged cartirg spawls from Mr. F. Deed's to Buckland Road. When sufficient spawls wore carted they would be able to link up the road to the borough boundary. The workmen would be engaged on work that was on hand to keep them fully employed until the New Year. These works consisted of redressing King Street, tarring footpaths, carting metal, trimming paths and a general claan up of any paths that were becoming overgrown with daisies. Sufficient material was on hand to do the necessary work on King Street so that any expense incurred would be for labour only. The report was adopted. Cr. Patterson urged that Prospect Terrace footpath be completed as early as possible. It was decided to do the work as soon as material was available.

In reply to Cr. Bilkey, the foreman said the footpath near Mr. Cathcart's place was receiving attention.
