ELECTIONS AND LOAN.
j The consensus of opinion on the j results of the Franklin County Conn i til elections scents to be that on the (whole a first-rate council has been put in, with which general opinion J wc are in accord. Some good men j were beaten, but nevertheless there j were so many good men patriotically j offering their services for the welI fare of Lhe county that it was hardly j possible to do other than secure a !* cry good proportion indeed of capable and conscientious men, who will carry on the progressive" programme put forward by the previous^conned. One very picasant feature about thelections is that, as far us we know, there were * no undesirable practiceindulged in, the light being fought ; on clean and honourable, line.-, ert-d- 1 itable alike Lo the victors and ihci vanquished * ; As was fully anticipated, the rate payers rose splendidly to the -occasion in favour of the all-important
machinery loan proposal, - which was carried by a substantial majority, the cnly really solid opposition coming from ratepayers who believed that, owing to the rugged nature of the country they live in the machinery would not be of great service to them; time will pro\<e that the machinery will be of much value in these areas, even if in an indirect way. At anyrate, with a council of high axerage ability and integrity, which will have adequate machinery and plant to carry out extensive work at a minimum cost, much may be expected within the next three years.
