CARRY ON.
The response to the appeal for funds for a war memorial has not been as liberal as was hoped for, there being a good deal of opposition, mostly without much foundation. However, about £3OO is in sight, and it should not be a matter of great difficulty to get the Nearly nil the surrounding district's, .ijaye provided for local wai memorial' Jong ago, and the residents of these as well as all of the experienced real war and ing, must be rather cflagustScl with opulent Pukekohe's unseemly wrangles. A heated controversy on such 'a.subject is not iji 'jthe best of taste, and we believe moreover that the main objections are imaginary rather than real. Firstly, some people object to the name of a donor of a war memorial park being attached to it. Now. whether that is a valid objection to raise cu'~Jli>t ; it does not 9p|jly" in Pukekohc, since the name of the donor of the park need not appear on the war We have heard of a case in the ."'Sou th Island where, contrary to the wjishe.s of the giver, his name was embossed on a war memorial, so he promptly' ".hopped it out with i>n axe, saying that ins gift was one having patriotice motive.*!- and not self-kudos be hind it. FrAn what we know of the donor in the present instance, we should say that while he wishes his name associated with the memorial uark he would object to its inclusion in the memorial itself—and it is the proposed memorial, and not the Dark that is under discussion, and for which funds are required A second objection, equally groundless, is that the design is not suitable. This is ather amusing, since no design has >et been chosen, this matter being left to I lie discretion of (lie 1-uke-kohe Soldiers' War Memorial Commit fee. With all due respect to genuine objector.,, we think that mature rellection will convince them that the only decent Ihing to do is to sink their differences and pay their share.. Let. us not he blinded by mere names, catchwords and shadows of things, and imaginary grievances, for i'ukekolie is the main centre between Auckland and Hamilton, and for the sake of its reputation, if not from motives of patriotism and g>alitude, the balance the money must be found for the provision of a credits able war memorial.
