A local resident wrote suggesting that now that the council had definitely decided to take over the Roul-j-ton Park that a small annual subscription be levied on tennis players using the park tennis courts. He also pointed out that the courts required markipg, and a new net was necessary. The revenue received from foes would contribute largely towards the upkeep of the courts. A blackboard was also required so that players waiting for a game could place their names on the board, indicating that they were next to occupy the courts.—lt was decided to reply stating the matter was in hand. With regard to the park, the Mayor, chairman of the Finance Committee, said the committee had not jet drawn up by-laws governing the courts. A scale of fees had been suggested, namely, 30s per annum, 15s half-year, 7s 6d quarterly, 5s month- ! iv, and Is a day for players using the courts, while ladies,- and children under 16 would be admitted at half the fee. Before they drew up by-laws. 1 hey intended to get further information. The clerk was instructed to get tickets printed for intending players or. the courts. Cr. Armstrong suggested the erection of a rest-room at the park for women and children coming to Pukekohe from the country, and the installation of a hot point so that food for infants could be warmed up. He thought the matter could be held ever in the meantime. Cr. Patterson: The place would have to be locked at night. Cr. Daysh: Yes. It might become too much of a resting place (Laughter.) Franklin Road. The engineer, Mr. D. W. McArihur, lorwarded plans of proposed work on Franklin Road, requesting that Mr. Jos. Adams' signature, together with the Mayor and-a councillor, and the commoon seal of the borough oe affixed thereto, and the plans forwarded to the chief surveyor for approval as early as possible so that the road could be dedicated. As soon as this was done the Government grant for llie work could be lifted.—lt was decided to take the necessary steps as suggested by Mr. McArthur. The Mayor and Cr. Hamilton were authorised to sign the plan. REPORTS.
Works Committee.
The Works Committee reported as lullows:—A culvert has been placed in Glasgow's Road, and a temporary approach made to enable people to have access to the road. The concrete Kerbing and channelling has been extended as far as the junction of EdinStreet along Harris Street, ft was found necessary to fence this portion of the road to prevent the kerb from being damaged by cattle and horses driven along the street. The formation work in Nelson Street was nearing completion. The engineer, Mr. D. W. McArthur, has ordered pipes for the outfall drain from the® recreation ground, and as scon as they arrived the work would be done. The committee recommended that the council take the necessary steps to declare Harris Street closed to drovers, and substitute Nelson Street as a stock route. It was very desirable that this should be done at once. Cr. Keith drew the council's attention to the fact that the people at the northern end of the district would bo considerably inconvenienced if Harris Street was closed before Franklin Road was opened up. Although he brought up the matter he favoured the idea of closing such roads to stock after suitable substitute routes were provided. Cr. Daysh said already it had cost the council ':10 to repair damago done to the kerb through the cattle. Cr. Keith pointed out that there were any amount of cattle straying along the roads that damaged the kerb. For a man with a couple of cattle to go to Nelson Street and back to the saleyards put him to considerable inconvenience. Cr. Armstrong strongly supported the recommendation, pointing out the danger that existed to school children. The report was adopted on the motion of the Mayor and Cr. Armstrong and the committee was authorised to erect finger-posts indicating the stock route. Waterworks and Lighting Committee. The Waterworks and Electricity Committee reported as follows: The excavation of earthwork for the new audition to power-house is now practically ompleted. of the concrete material is now to hand ant! upon the arrival of the balance a start will be made with the erection of the buildings. Tin; temporary addition to liie present building for tne new pump has been erected, and as the new pumplied, which was delayed in Auckland for repairs before delivery, is now to hand will he brought into use at the earliest opportunity. As soon as this pump has been tested and found satisfactory a start will be made with 1 hr> partition in the top reservoir. When this pump is in use it will be possible to supply water to consumers on Ihe hill during the day lime only until the new partition in reservoir has been completed, as it will be impossible to store water in the leservoir while the work is in progress. l!v studying economy with the consumption of electric current, and with
the Kind assistance received from the manager of the Waipa collieries in supplying coal, we were able to carry on both water and light with very little inconvenience to consumers during' the past coal strike. Electrical Extensions.—We find that it is impossible to get delivery of poles, which have been on order for the past six months, but as soon as these arrive the electrical extensions already authorised will be completed.
