The usual fortnightly meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board was held in the Board's office on Tuesday evening last. There were present: Messrs A. W. Bell (chairman), J. Watson, J. C. Bryan, A. U. Timewell, G. D. Smith and J. Death. The Works Committee reported having arranged with the works foreman for the workmen to work from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on five clays only during the summer months. A suggestion from an Auckland firm regarding the purchase of roadmaking machinery was referred to the Works Committee for investigation. © A number of small accounts were passed for 1 payment, and other minor matters dealt with. A farmer was the father of twelve children, all of whom had been rocked in the same cradle. He was rocking the newest arrival one night when his wife remarked: "John, that cradle is nearly worn out; it's so rickety that I'm afraid it will fall to pieces." "It's about used up," replied her husband. Then, handing her . l ;2, he added, "The next time you go Vj town get a new one, a good one, that will last." FOR SALE: SECOND-HAND GIG. First-Class Order. The other day on a farm not a | hundred miles from Auckland a milkj ing cow was found dead, haying fall- ! en over a bank. It was noticed that I clinging to the end of almost every I hair of the cow's hide were innumerj able lice. An effort was made to ' roughly estimate their number, and I by taking a patch six inches square land counting them and multiplying the remaining space a conservative estimate put the number of lice on the cow in question at the ii.creuible number of half a million. A farmer present made the observation that almost half the cows in the Waikato were infected with lice in the winter and early spring, and also that i in his opinion this reduced their milk j vield at least one quarter. T Ju 't reckon the astounding waste. If hall the I herds in the Waikato arc infected 1 with lice, and a-qaarter < f their I yield lost to tte farmer, it means that thousands of pound 3 ev :ry year I go to feed these hungry pa' tsites. ! Here, then, is a remedy: By a lin !of "THOMPSON'S LICERIN and : smear a little down the munal s i back. Licerine kills them b!. An i absolutely new preparation, I ful in its results. Effective o:-.
