PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

USUAL MEETING. LOCAL MATTERS DISCUSSED. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held on Wednesday evening. There were present: Messrs. S. Evans (chairman), J. Rea, T. D. Campbell, D. W. Jones, Montgomery and A. L. Cooper (clerk)• Prior to proceeding with the usuai business of the meeting the chairman mentioned the loss to one of the members of the board, Mr J. Ilea, of one of . his family, and moved a vote of sympathy with him in his bereavement. Mr. Evans also mentioned the death of a former member of the board, Mr. Samuel Clark. A vote of condolence with these people was carried, all present standing. The contractor lor cartage of coal from the Hunua collieries, Mr. Grace, appeared before the board to ascertain what arrangements could be made to permit him to carry heavier loads over the roads. Mr Grace pointed out that the output of the mine was increasing all the time, and he desired to replace his two-ton lorry with one which would carry three tons. He was prepared to meet the board in any fair propositon. Members of the board were unanimously of the opinion that every effort should be made to encourage the coal industry, but it was icalised that the board must protect themselves and consider the damage likely to be caused to the road. After some discussion an amicable agreement was made. The clerk of the Manukau County Council wrote informing the board that it had been agreed to allow the board thirty days in which to find a new sanitary dump. The matter was briefly discussed, and left to the sanitary committee to deal with. Mr. Jones brought up the matter of the board's waterworks proposal. He said that this matter had been more or less shelved, and he considered that the work should be pro ceeded with. The ratepayers had authorised "the raising of a loan of #28,000, and something should be done immediately: £IO,OOO was now available, and a further £IO,OOO could be secured from the State Advances Office. The remaining £BOOO would be required to be raised privately. He moved that the work be proceeded with immediately, and that steps be taken to raise a loan of £BOOO. Mr. Kea seconded, and the motion was carried without dissent. It was decided to obtain estimates for kerbing in the centre of the township.
