LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

THE WAR MEMORIAL. Sir,—l notice that there been no reply, with the exception of your footnote, to the enquiry made in Mr. Cronin's letter in your last Friday's isMie as to the authority for ignoring the vote given by the ratepayers, at the request of the Borough Council, some time since. I therefore lake ijie liber! y, with your permis -ion, to .-talc the case as it stands. Despite the fac' that tin- ratepayers had derided the war memorial question in the following order; Firs!, public hospital; second, swimming bath; 3; 3rd, monument: (the hospital wa„. tunied. down bv the Hospital Hoard), the Mayor, Mr, C, K, Law ne, is the man responsible for jg. iioring the public vote. He called two meetings to be held, in the Borough Council Chambers, evidently no! nxpeetinp, many to attend, the accommodation being limited. Only a few wen- present on either occasion, due I take if, lo the fact that the ratepayers had already given their decision. At the first meeting the majority of those present • recognised that they bad no power to alter the decision of the ratepayers,, but at the second meeting Ihe bait of the Roul ston Park was too much for the maj- ■ lity, There was only one who voted against the proposal to erect tiemonument on the new site proposed. I have declined to be a collector for the fund for the following reasons:(i) 1 could not consistently do so. holding the opinion that the meetings had no right to upset the vote previously taken as expressed at the two meetings called by the Mayor; 2nd, that the advertisement described the site as the "Roulston .Memorial Park." K.F.W.
