BUCKLAND. SCHOOL MATTERS. The long expected timber for the Buck land School has arrived, and before the school opens after the Christmas vacation the contractor expects the fine four-roomed building will be finished. At a meeting of the school committee held on the evening of October 1§ it was decided to make extensive improvements to the grounds. After dibCU9pion with the headmaster it was decided to attempt to rni£j<»' £l5O fwhich will carry a subsidy by an effort spread over several months. A school concert is to be held in December, a dramatic and ' musical competition in the new year, and a flower show at a date to be arranged to suit both the season and Mr. Massey. It is hoped to hold the show in the school for an official opening, when the Premier may be able to open the show, and the Min istar for Education the school. With the money to be raised the committee. hopes to plough, clear and grass the grounds, provide tennis courts, cricket sets, and other conveniences foi»-th<? children, and beautify the grounds vfith trees and shrubs. TUAKAU.

r-W- ' - SECTIONS SELLING. A number of valuable sections near the proposed new town hull site were recently .disposed of, as well as other properties, which indicates that people have every confidence in the nipid development of Tuakau. COUNCIL ELECTIONS. Kilorts are being made to persuade Mi Dynes Fulton to allow himself to be nominated for a .seat on the Raplan County Council, representing Pukekawa riding'. POLICE AFFAIRS. Tuakau is wroth over the fact that, though the town has had a resident constable for many years, that functionary is now conspicuous by his ab--5 sence, the reason being the lack of a dweilinghouse. A grant of money exists for the provision of a residence, and a jail is also located in the town. Agitation is now getting afoot for the stationing of a resident constable at Tuakau agai.i and • for tho°" provision of a courthouse. These matters will probably come up for discussion at the next meeting of the Town Board, and will dulv be chronicled in the "Times." TENNIS REASON. The public are cordially invited to attend the opening of the Tuakau tennis courts for the season, which takes place on Saturday October* 20, at 2 p.m.

PAPAKURA. The Presbyterian Sunday School'sBible Class is to hold a monster reunion here on Monday (Labour Day). A very fine crop of potatoes is being dug by Mr. Winthrop, a new settler on Kerikeri Hill. A Pukekohe visitor, who saw the samples dug this week, states they are buttei than any yetP dug in his district. With land here selling at less thai" an acre, and the easy facility for marketing, the potato-growing industry should commend itself t< market gardeners. The overcrowded state of the loca schoo' is causing some concern to tht School Committee, who are ondeas ouring to rent a building to iclievt the congestion. We understand that the roll is now about 'i-'iO pupils. Mrs. Wood, vv ir• • of the vic:ir the district, is seriously ill in Auck land. The oflicial opening ol ti• iio.'.lin 1 green will take place on .{Olh inst when a record gathering is antiei pated. The croquet lawns will 1" opened on the same afternoon.
