STRANGE EVIDENCE. 500,000 BLOOD SUCKERS AT WORK. The other day on a farm not a hundred miles from Auckland a milking cow was found dead, having fallen over a bank. It was noticed that clinging to the end of almost every hair of the cow's hide were innumerable lice. An effort was made to roughly estimate their number, and by taking a patch six inches square and counting them and multiplying the remaining sp.ice a conservative estimate put the number of lice or the cow in question at the incredible number of half a million. A fanner present made the observation that al most half the cows in the Waikato were infected with lice in the winter and early spring, and also that in his opinion this reduced their nn'lk yield at least one quarter. Just reckon the astounding waste. If half the herds in the Waikato are infected with lice, and a-quarter of their yield lost to the farmer, it means that thousands of pounds every yeai go to feed these hungry parasites.
