THE BUTTER QUESTION.
(By Nemesis.) Ho! whence these wrathful clamours loud, And whence this frenzied squeal, fcerce imprecations, and wild threats. At,pinch of fortune's wheel? Ho! whence incessant prate of strikes, If price of butter rises?— "But that's a game that two can Play," The cocky sly advises. Ho! whence the fat consumer's wrath? No more his larder fills With choicest viands, at sweated wage, Wrung from the man who tills. Ho! whence this smug hypocrisy, Pot-bellied wealth's incense—"Our people poor must have cheap food?" Aye, but at whose expense? Ho! whence those shouts of "profiteers?" Ye blatants! were ye wise You'd stifle them ere shamed to hear Just how the balance lies! Ho! whence this "tax the farmer" cry? / Tax mortgage! income! land! The very sunshine that he breathes! You hold him well in hand! Ho! brush the cobwebs from your brain! From dust-motes clear your sight! Loarn lothly your tax-seeking leech No more shall bleed him white! The drudge whose back your burdens bore Since time on earth began, Now blossoms forth in human worth, And franchised stands—a Man.
