PLAYING UP TO "V."

GUINEAS AND A BLESSING. WOMEN'S WITS WIN. The following exchange of communications between the Ngaruawahia Plunket Society and Mr. P. Virtue, of the Northern Roller Milling Company, Auckland, explain themselves:— "Dear Mr. Virtue,—A branch of the Plunket Society has recently been formed in Ngaruawahia, and we are anxious for the* hearty support of all in this good cause. As you are aware the people of this progressive borough of ours subsist almost entirely on your famous Champion Muscle Raiser, Standard Oatmeal and Rolled Oats, and we want the future generations to enjoy similar privileges. Therefore, unless generous support be given our Plunket Society, there will be few babies left

to be reared later on upon your famous foods, consequently your great mills will then be compelled to close down. This would, indeed, be a national calamity. Knowing that you have the welfare at heart of your people in general and the babies in particular, may be ask for your practical sympathy in our work. One gentleman here has promised to subscribe five guineas if we can find three others to do likewise. Lo, we I have written! and if you think we have "nerve" in so doing, please attribute it to our faring too lavishly on your Champion Muscle Raiser, Standard Oatmeal and Rolled Oats—Thanking you in anticipation, we are, yours sincerely, A. G. Morrish, president, E.

V. Hemus hon. sec." "Mesdames Morrish and Hemus president and hon. secretary, Plunket Society,—My dear ladies: Your heart reaching epistle to hand praising th< many 'virtues' of Champion anc Standard products and to refuse such a 'nervous' request one would have tc be a cannibal. To gladden your heart: and those of the society and to bring other gentry up to the mark to save our future Empire builders, we have pleasure in handing you money-order for £6 6s, with my blessing.—V., Auckland."
