The other day on a farm not a : hundred miles from Auckland a milking cow was found dead, having fallen over a bank. It was noticed that clinging to the end of almost every hair of the cow's hide were innumerable lice. An effort was made to roughly estimate their number, and by taking a patch six inches square and counting them and multiplying the remaining space a conservative estimate put the number of lice on the cow in question at the incredible number uf half a million. A farmer present made the observation that%lmost Half the cows in the Waikato v\cre infected with lice in the winter and early spring, and also that iii Ins opinion this reduced their milk , yield at least one quarter. Just reckon the astounding waste.
