Jones saw Smith drowning. He was about to dive in and save him, when he suddenly realised that Smith had managed to obtain a house that he (Jones) had his eye on. He therefore left Smith to drown, rushed to the estate agent, and told him that Smith had been unlucky enough to get drowned, and that we wanted Smith's house. "You're too late," said the estate agent, "the fellow who pushed him in has Rot it."
