PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

FINAL MEETING.

The final meeting of the members of the present Papakura Town Board was held last evening, when there were present: Messrs E. D. McLennan (in the chair), A. Wallis, T. D. Campbell, I). VV. Jones, Jos. Ilea, S. Evans, and the clerk (Mr. A. L. Cooper).

Proposed Subway.

The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, intimated that the proposal to close the old Wairoa Road and to provide a subway had been approved by the Railway -Department. The chief engineer of the Department stated that it was essential that there should )>e a resolution of the Town Board agreeing to the deviation and subway, and the closing of the portion of the old Wairoa Road to be abandoned, and that a of the resolution be forwarded to the Department. The Board decided to forward a resolution in accordance with the request.

Resident's Rqgbest. Mr. J. B. Finnagan th"the board's attention tojthe pipe across East Street which was-, too high to prevent the water from Great South Road getting away, with the result it flowed back on to his property and damaged his garden. He requested the matter be attended to expeditiously. The surfaceman is to be instructed to attend to the matter. Workers' Dwellings for Papakura. Ministerial Reply.

In reply to' the board's letter urging upon the Government to erect workers' dwellings at Papakura, the Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister for Labour) intimated that the Housing Superintendent advises that up to the present time no applications had been received for workers' dwellings at Papakura. It was the policy of the Housing Board to* erect dwellings only for approved applicants, and until applications were received no allocation of dwellings was made to any town. He forwarded notes for guidance, together with application forms, for the benefit of the board. The chairman stated that the Raiway Department owned an area of land at Papakura, and as it also had a large number of railway workers resident at Papakura it would be a good idea to urge upon the Department to erect a number of dwellings on the land, and thus relieve the present position regarding the scarcity of houses. He moved in this direction.

Mr. Rea seconded, and the motion was carried upanimously.

Road Loan £45(0. £9Ol Remitted.

The Superintendent of State Advances Office advised that £9OO of the Papakura road loan, 1920, of £4500, had been remitted, and placed to the credit of the board at the bank. —Received. Finance. Accounts amounting to £lB2 18s Id were submitted, approved of, and passed for payment. Insurance. It was decided to take immediate steps to insure the board's residence located on the recently-acquired park. Tenders. The following tenders were accepted:— Formation Queen Street, £l9B 8s: Mr. H. Blank.

Green Street path foimatioli > ,£2B Mr. H. Blank.

Levelling park, £427 7s 7d: Mr. H. Blank.

Lease of park, £36 8s per annum Mr. H. Blank.

NEWSY NOTES.

The preliminary rounds for the Golf Club championships begin this week, when 14 men and 18 ladies will compete. The winners will draw for the next round, and the fiqals are expected to take place in about a fort night. Mr. Blank has made a start at the work of putting down the new tennis courts. When finished they will supply a long-felt want in the district.

At the present time a great deal of sickness i.-> prevalent, influenza and bad colds affecting a great many people. Mr. Elliott, schoolmaster, has been confined to his home for u fortnight, but is now convalescent, while both the Anglican and Methodist ministers have been on-.sick leave. As fast as material can be obtained new buildings are started;, jghjle farmlets are still changing at satisfactory prices.
