SNOOKER TOURNAMENT

WON BY l»IR. L. SHORT. the smoker tournament at Annstrong's billiard saloon which has been in progress for some time past was concluded last evening; in the presence of a large attendance of spectatois. The arrangement for the tournament was the outcome of a suggestion by Mr. Duncan Roulston, who donated a beautiful gold medal lor the con,petition. There were four sections, and those were won respectively by Messrs. L. Short (scr.), T. L. Maxwell (scr.), ('. Weston free. HtQ r-iul 11 Mitchell dec. 22). The semi-' Nnals wen played last evening, when L. Slu.r-t defeated C. Weston, .and Bv Mitchell wo-i from T. Maxwell. The final' was between L. Short and B. ♦litrhelk- Mitchell commenced well >.u>J..uml a slight lead when the lirat game finished. In the second, game Niort played a'good' deal of Safety, while Mitchell was leaving some easy shots. The scratched man soon lorged ahead, and when the black was .poted for the last time in the second-*;aine* he was -14 in the lead. handicap against him Mitchell..'made a determined effort to reduce it.. He did so to a certain exlent, but when he appeared to have a remote chance of recovering he missed several easy shots, which Miort look advantage of and drawing away won by 52 points, lie scored !l>!) points as against the loser's 117, including his handicap. The winner played steadily throughout and thoroughly deserved his win, which was ii very popular one. Mitchell thus secures second prize, while Maxwell defeated Weston for the third trophy.

At tlie conclusion of the games the competitors were entertained at supper by Mr. Armstrong, who, on l>ehalf of Mr. Konlston, presented the gold medal to the winner amidst loud applause, -The other trophies will he presented at a later ditto.
