PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL
COMMITTEES' REPORTS. At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday night the following reports were presented: — WATERWORKS. The waterworks committee reported as follows: The committee begs to report having paid a visit of inspection of all works at power-house, and finds that the new engine is now in its place on the bed, and the engineer informs us that the same will be ready to take up the load as soon as sufficient time has elapsed for setting of concrete foundations.
We also beg to report that the pump that was ordered some eighteen months ago is now to hand, and that owing to the bad repair of present pump we have authorised the engineer to push on with the erection of same. As pointed out by the engineer, no space being available to accommodate same in the present power-house, we would recommend that a temporary shed be erected in front of present building for the accommodation of the pump, and on completion of additions to present power-house the same can be removed inside and placed on foundation at present occupied by one of the dynamos. The earthwork for the new powerhouse is being pushed on with, the same being handled by means of truck on light rails. Owing to there being need of storage room in the near future for the storing of electrical and waterworks fittings your committee would recommend that authority be given for the erection of a shed for the storing of the abovementioned fittings on the back portion of the new t&wry hall site.
We beg to hand in for your per*, usal a complete set of of the recommended additions drawn up by Mr. Walker and our own engineer. The same has been carefully considered by your committee, and we would recommend that tenders be immediately called for the supply and delivery of same. Section A to section G and section J be returnable in three months; section H.I.K.L. be returnable in one month.
Prices are being secured for the whole of the pipe- required for waterworks extensions, and we hope to have same with recommendations to submit to you for next council meeting.
Cr. Armstrong said the new engine erected at the power-house was a particularly good purchase for the borough, and was capable of doing all required of it.
The committee suggested calling tenders for poles and wires, etc., returnable in a month, so that they could proceed with the erection of the electrical lines, and the tenders for the machinery in three months. By the time the machinery came to Hand the extensions would be well on #, wa y- The committee was san(tsuinefUhat by next winter the borough would have a 24-hour lighting fcervicepjrith no possibility of a short- ' agg oPjpQwr. the motion of the Mayor the was adopted. , WORKS. The works commutoii reported as follows.— The formation work on Paerata Road has been completed from the end of the metal to the boundary. The remaining portion of this road to the bridge is already metalled, but very unsatisfactory. The road is of uneven character and requires regrading throughout to conform with the newly formed portion. This, however, could well stand over until more important and urgent works are completed elsewhere. The formation work on Harris St. footpath,is almost complete as far as Hall Street. This is a decided improvement.
The foreman has concrete material deposited on Prospect Terrace path,
also material for the same purpose for Harris Street and East Street, arid will, in the course of a day or two, have this work in hand. Your committee is pleased to report that we expect to make a start with the quarry within a few days. Your committee beg to submit the following list of work to be carried our during the coming season, viz:— No. 1 Roads. —Both ends of the borough to be connected up with metal. Wellington and Nelson Streets to be completed, more particularly Nelson Street, as this road will open up the way for drovers. As at present it is almost impossible to keep up paths where cattle are driven. No 2 Paths.—Paths from horse bazaar to recreation ground gates, thence along Edinburgh Street to connect with King Street. Prospect Terrace path to be completed, also eastern side of East Street and portion of West Road paths. As you are well aware there are numerous works that require attention in addition to those mentioned, but your committee beg to make a special recommendation in view of the uncertainty of getting suitable men and materials not to embark on more work than we can reasonably expect to complete.
• Stonecrusher.—lt is the intention of the committee to get right on with supplies of metal at the quarry, and in the meantime purchase a suitable crushing plant, which we hope to have in% readiness by the time we have sufficient metal to commence crushing. The report was adopted on the motion of Crs. Keith and Hamilton. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. D. W. McArthur) reported as follows, and the report was adopted on the motion of Cr. Patterson and the Maypr:— I beg to report that I am at present engaged in taking levels all over the central part of Pukekohe to ascertain the most suitable -jkittions for the sewer drains, and as soon as I have this done I shall submit same for your approval. When inspecting the proposed site for the public baths in company with Cr. Armstrong and the town clerk I find that there is not likely to be any difficulty in connexion with the supposed bed of sand, which, I think, is inclined to taper out on the Domain side of Harris Street. The emptying of the baths may possibly require to be by the present drain through the middle of the Domain, and as this is required for the surface drainage from quite a large area of road lines it would be well to have it constructed in a manner that it would do so efficiently, for which it could either be laid in earthenware pipes or covered concrete, which would keep it free from vegetable growth, besides allowing it to be covered over, and thus do away with the halving of the grounds.. In connexion with working plant I would recommend the purchasing of a boring plant, as it will be necessary to test the ground in places where the sub-strata are not yet known. The plant, always on hand, can be used when wanted without having to wait for other owners' convenience, and when done with can be sold at little less than cost price. As there will require to be several plans of the borough whereon to delineate the lines of water pipes, electric wires and drainage, and only one plan is in existence, I took the liberty of ascertaining the cost of obtaining a number of lithographs, and now find that for £26 I can get 300 copies the same size as the plan now in the office. I would strongly recommend the council to get these, which will be of great value to your officers as well as having them on hand for sale.
