W. P. He pointeu out that a railway from the city of Auckland gang the waterfront for the purpose of giving railway facilities to localities admirably suited for residential areas was a necessity, and also that such a line should connect with the Main Trunk railway at Westfield was. equally condemned, because in the future with a large iiwveaie of population in Auckland it would be found too small in extent, and he was of the opinion that a new suburban line should certainly
connect Howick with the city. Whether or not it should be continued as far as Clevedon, or through Clevetlon to Paeroa, was a question which he supposed could not be settled be fore a survey of the route was taken. He urged upon the council to suggest to the Government a broader and bolder scheme than the suggested loop line from the city tajwome point on the main line .aidjEiroximity of Westfield. ' WSr ~„ In connexion with the sSms matter thft Mnnurewa Town the council to take into consideration the,.advisability of tthe proposed railway joining up at either Papatoetoe : ur'Manurewa, and also the advisability of the Paeroa-East Codst'i^Jfae* I joining up at either Taktfffl|;sr*sla* nurewa—both those being of vital interest to the djftldty as a whole.
THttmatter was brought up at last meettaig by Cr. Waters, when he suggests! that the council endeavour to revise a movement set afoot some years ago. Cr. Waters said the ob lections raised some years ago with regard to the payment of compensation had now been waived through tli« introduction of the Hiley schemes. At the last meeting the clerk was instructed to communicate with Mr. John Gill, Howick, Mr. L. Gilbertson, (Whitford), Mr. John Meager (Whitford), Mr. C. C. Munro (Clevedon), and Mr. T, J. Lockwood (Hunua), members of the old committees set up with a view to .having the ptoposed railway constructed, with i< view of getting further information on the subject. As the persons written to had not all replied, the mat ter was deferred pending replies from theni. In connexion with the Mi nurewv letter the clerk reported that he had replied stating the council whs waiting for answers from the persons written to for information.
