LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
PUKEKOHC ROADS. Sir,—During the past four months it has been mv misfortune to have to traverse, almost daily the roads in the Pukekohe district, and as 1 pass along I cannot fail to notice the fertility and natural beauty oi' the whole district, but day after day while I bump over tthe miles of mud-holes and loose scoria, designat-
Ed roads, there comes to my mind the story of the "Gintleman" of the Emerald Isle, who built his pigsty on the front lawn to make it look homely. Whether our councillors a;c simply desirous of. keeping our district ''homely," or whether they know no better, it is hard to say, but the fact remains that our roads are a disgrace to our day and generation, and my heart goes out to our late Robby Burns, when in a like plight he wrote:— I's now arrived, thanks to the gods! Thro' pathways rough and muddy, A certain sign that making roads Is not this people's study, And tho' I'm not with Scripture crammed, I'm sure the Bibye says, That heedless sinners shall be dam med, Unless they mend their ways.
