TUAKAU R.S. BALL
BRILLIANT FUNCTION. August 4 was commemorated by the returned soldiers of Tuakau and district in a very striking fashion, the Diggers' annual ball falling on that date. The function was 'held on what, at the present time, might be described as a lavish scale, no trouble or expense within reason having been spared to make the function a success. And the promoters did make it a success, brilliantlv so.
There were 150 couples present, which is probably a record. Revel's Hall was taxed quite beyond its capacity, making it perfectly obvious that there is need for a new hall, with modern conveniences, at Tuakau, about which subject we shall have more to say later on* The building- was gracefully festooned and the floor in good order, thanks to the industrious workers, acting with the secretary, C. A. Ryder. The grand march was an imposing array with so large a number for the small hall, and was led off by Mr. Mark Morgan and Miss Ravenhili. And the music; it was splendid as supplied by Mr. J. Hindman's (Pukekohe) orchestra, the instruments being piano, violin and cornet, always an excellent combination for dance music. People possessing more Than average knowledge of music made very complimentary references to this important factor. The astonisher of the function was the supper, served in a large marquee, and was really sumptuous, the tables being laden with jellies, trifles, salads and a liberal allowance of cream. Diggers did the waiting, and they were out on their own, no one else having to wait a moment for anything. There was a spick and span military precision about that waiting service which gave it the hallmark of cllicicncy. Visitors wondered how such a spread could be put on the boards for the money, but the secret lay in the fact that it was all in the hands of a capable
committee of ladies, consisting of Mesdames Dynes Fulton, Strahan, Tapper, Leaman, Harrison. Revell, Tregertha, Lee; Misses Lewis and Leaman, assisted by others whose names the writer was unable to ascertain before leaving in the fine new Overland car kindly provided by the Pukekohe agent for the same (Mr. W. Fyfe, secretary of the Pukekohe Returned Soldiers' Association).
The piasters of ceremonies, Messrs. J. Nicholson, A. Boyle and E. 'Lee, conducted the ball capably, and with strict regard to the etiquette of ballroom practice. They were also courteously attentive to strangers nnd others in need of partners, which l'eature was duly appreciated. In every respect the Diggers' ball wns handsomely creditable to the promoters nnd the ladies associated with them, nnd it will certainly prove an excellent advertisement for a similar function next year in a fine new hall if the parochial wet blankets :-re not allowed to dampen the present enthusiasm of both the moderate and progressive people among tlie ratepayers.
