MILKING SHORTHORN BREEDERS

FRANKLIN BRANCH FORMED.

A meeting- of those interested in tfie breeding of Shorthorn cattle was held in the Franklin A. and P. Society's rooms, Pukekohe, yesterday afternoon, convened by Mr A. P. Home, who explained the objects of the meeting, namely, to form a branch of th» New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association (Incorporated) at Pukekohe. This was a result of discussion between breeders at the last autumn show. Breeders were looking forward to having some of' the best strain in the Dominion in this district, which was well on its way now with, the young progeny now coming on.

The following are the names of those present: Messrs. A. P. Home, J. W. Robinson, A. J. Melville, R. King, W. J. Holmes, J. Batkin, sen., J. Batkin, jun., J. Glasgow. Mr. A. J. Melville moved that a branch and sub-provincial executive be formed, to be known as the Franklin Branch of the New Zealand Shorthorn Association. This was seconded by_ Mr. R. King, and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. R. King, seconded by Mr. J. Glasgow, Mr. A. P. Home was elected chairman, unopposed.

Mr. J. W. Robinson was appointed secretary on the motion of Mr. Melville seconded by Mr. W. J. Holmes. Mr. Melville was appointed delegate for the branch to the parent body. The chairman stressed the advantages the branch might have by being able to operate as far north as Auckland, south as Hamilton, and out to the West Coast, by means of subexecutives in various centres. The rules would require amendment to permit of these sub-executives.

On the motion of Mr. Melville, the rules of the council, with amendments as suggested by the chairman, were adopted.

A very important motion, and one that might be applied to kindred branches, was that moved by the chairman to the effect that localbranches should be given wider powers. This was held in abeyance for

the time being. Mr. Melville referred to the decision of the Holstein and Jersey breeders to hold an annual sale of pedigree stock. Mr. R. F. Wilkinson, president of the Jersey Breeders' Asso--1 cfotion, had asked that the .Shorthorn breeders' local branch elect delegates to arrange to confer and cooperate. Messrs. Robinson, Batkin, sen., and Melville were appointed, A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Home as convener and chairman.
