SMOKE CONCERT.
The attraction at the Oddfellows
Hall last evening was a fareweli smoke concert tendered to Messrs C Whit-mire ard li. Pattle by the for-
nier of Mr. William Roulston, who severed their connection with firm, which is now owned
by tK* Farmers' Luien Trading Company. Mr. Whitmore, who was head storeman for Mr. Roulston, was in his enrolov for about 12 years, while
Mr. Pattlc was manager of the produce department for about 15 months. Mr. J. G. Russell presided over m attendance of about 70, in eluding ;• large lepresentation of the farming community.
During the evening Mr. Russeli presented Mr. Whitmore with a sil--1 er-pl.i'ed kettle on stand, and two plated sugar basins, and to Mr. Pitlie with a silver-plated cake basket, as a mark of the esteem and appreciation in which thev were held.
Both suitably responded. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Russeil said that Mr. Whitmore was cne of the men recently made mention of the past that he was blessed with .oyal eplyoyees. Mr. Whitmore was one of these men. He was painstaking and accurate in all matters connected with his work, and now that he had decided to reiiquish his occupation to take up farming all wished him success in his venture.
Referring to Mr. Pattle, Mr. Russeil said that he had only been a short while with them, but during that period he had made himself \vr\ popular with his fellow-employees, and that owing to the change of ownership a reorganisation had to be made in the various departments of the linn, dill'ere.it to tl. it carried on by Mr. Roulston: therefore the position held by Mr. Pattle could onl\ be in the new firm a very minor one, sr. he decided to launch out on his own account, and he carried the company'.s good wishes for a successful future. A -louceabia feature if the evening was the presence of Mr. Daniel Goodwin, an old identity, who made glowing icferenees to Mr. ('. ,Vhitinore. He said he had known his father and grandfather in years g.,n? by, and had been at several functions in honour of them in bygone dfw's, and he was now proud to be at the function in honour of the grandson of tho late Mr. Whitmore, whom he held In high esteem.
Speeches were made in answer to toasts oy Messrs. Robt. Bilkey and .Jas. Kennelly, and during which they made v. ami references to Mr. C. Whitmore. Speeches were iilso made oy liirf Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawlie), Messrs. P. Rowe, R. Blake, B. I town tree.
During the evening vocal items wore rendered by Messrs. J. 0 M alloy, E Curnow, and a triol by Messrs. 1). liiake, \V. Butler, .1. O'Malley. Recitit ion i v, ere rendered by Messrs. SU'\e:i- and H. V. Gribble. A successful functions was concluded at 10.30 p.m. by the rendering of "AuUl Lang Syne." and the Na tional Anthem.
