CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce was held in the Carnival Tearooms last night, the president (Mr. R. F. Webster) presiding. Prior to the meeting light refreshments were partaken of. The president deplored the small attendance, and stated that the chamber had justified its existence, and there waß much work to do in the future. The secretary (Mr. V. S. Roberts) presented the annual report, which, inter alia, expressed regret that the majority of the businessmen in the borough did not take an active inteiest in the chamber. The report traversed various matters, including railway improvements locally, telephone services, new courthouse, improved mail service to Waiuku, reinstating of the rural mail delivery, all of which the chamber had been instrumental in bringing about. There were several unpaid subscriptions. A vote of thanks was passed to the secretary for his report.

Election of Officers.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr R. F. Webster (re-elected unanimously); (Mr. P. Perkins declined nomination); vice-presidents, Messrs C. Cooper, F. Perkins, H. Dell and H. G. V. Fear; secretary-treasurer, V. b. Roberts (re-elected); council, Messrs. H. Dell, H. Pattle, C. Cooper, W. Hurle, H. Curd, Civil, T. E. McMillan, Melrose, C. Bonner; auditor, Mr. J. F. Deane. . . The meeting night was fixed for the fourth Monday in the month.

Main Roads' Problem.

The very important question of the provision of good main roads came up for discussion, the subject being introduced by Mr. F. Perkins, who advocated that the road should come through Pukekohe. This policy was > favoured by the Franklin County, Council, • Pukekohe Borough Council,Tuakau Town Board, and Mercer Town Board. Mr. F. Perkins was deputed to appear before the Royal Commission, representing the Chamber.
