LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THE WAIKATO RIVER. Sir,—l congratulate you on your able leader in your issue of June 22, re "Waikato River," and I quite appreciate most of the technical points raised and referred to, especially that part: "That the Government appoint a board with sufficient power end knowledge to deal with ootfc drainage and navigation." As a member of the Waiknto River Board I can state that our board is waiting patiently for that much desired body to be put in office. We have to thank our worthy chairman, Mr. W. A. Glass, and former members of the Waikato River Board, who, after long and strenuous endeavour, gave prominence to the requirement of this large part of the Auckland Province first, and the county generally, at an expenditure infinitesimal bv comparison with the returns The' Hon. T. Wilford, when Minister for Marine, after visiting the Waikato, suggested a similar renedy to that contained in your leade*, and promised the River Board that the. Government would appoint a board to deal with the whole of the Waikato River, its tributaries and drainage. The River Board has been waiting and urging the Government to appoint this promised board, as its lating powers are so limited that no favourable results are possible over such an extensive and valuable arev P. HENRY. Ohinewai, June 23, 1920.

AN APPRECIATION. The local authorities in both town and country have been subject to a lot of unflattering remarks lately on account of the condition of our main roads, but I want to voice quite another aspect of matters (not roads). I consider the above local bodies deserve our hearty thanks for taking up the matter of the train services, and the great inconveniences wer are . put to on account of the bad running of time-tabled trains. It is full time the people rose in a body and - demanded a better state of affairs, and eithe> mend or end the present service.

And again, the public should heartily and strongly support the local bodies in their effort to get riage put on that 9 o'clock far as Papakura. It would be a very convenience indeed to the district, and would be at least qpe step towards a suburban wrvice. SETILER. Buckland, . June 26, 1920.
