Health Act it was proposed w attempt to remove the existing dilliciilties in regard to the payment of fees or rates' from nightsoil, and refuse removal services, and thus glv* local bodies power to charge sufficient to cover expenses. Mr. Jones moved and Mr. Ilea seconded that a reply be forwarded urging that the Act be amended in the direction of giving local bodies power to charge sufficient for the cost of nightsoil removal- -Carried. The clerk was instructed to point out that in the past the board had to subsidise the revenue received for removal of nightsoil nut of rates to cover the expenses. Alleged Menace to Community. . Mr. W. T. VViddowson again drew j, the ward's attention to the dangerous state of the motor garage next to his property. Ho pointed out that the wooden floors were saturated with oil, etc, and a quantity of - motor spirit was stored in the building. He added that smoking was allowed to go on, and On the whole contended the position was a serious' one In the case of an outbreak of fire. He urged the board to take steps at once to remove the difficulty, thus obviating the risk of a fire. Mr. MeLennan stated that he thought Mr. Widdowson had room for complaint. In case of fire at the garage his property was in grave danger. The clerk read the Act, wherein provision was made for a person to store 10 gallons of motor spirits on his premises. It was pointed out that in the billiard-room, an adjoining room, there was a fire grate, and a fire nearly always burning, and with the floors saturated with oil, etc., there was gave danger of fire. The garage proprietor had recently acquired r> large stock of .spirits. Mr. Ren contended the noard should take some immediate action. Mr. Jones said that in the event of there being no public building for the storage of benzine, a license would have to be granted. The board had no public building for the purpose. Mr. Rea said that the law provided for only 10 gallons for private use, but for selling purposes a license was necessary for any amount. Mr. Rea moved that Messrs Webb and Co. be notified that the quantity of benzine in their premises was in excess of the quantity provided for . i-10 gallons—and that they should remove same forthwith, in default, he was incurring a fine of £2O per day for every day an amount in excess of 10 gallons, in accordance with the Act. Mr. Campbell seconded the motion, Mich was carried* It was also ttotify others storing benzine of the terms of the Act. Removal of Trees. Mr. J. E/Cain intimated that he was shortly going to erect a residence on his property on Young's Beach, and asked permission to remove some trees in front of his property. It was decided to call tenders for *4he removal of -the whole of the 34 k trees on Young's Beach Road. Congratulations. Mr. Thos. Clements, on behalf of the residents and users of Beach Road, complimented the board on the satisfactory manner in which the work on the road had been carried oat. "That'.s very refreshing indeed" said Mr. Jones. "I move that the letter be received." The chairman: "I thought you were going to move that i the letter be framed." (Laughter.) He suggested the clerk, it he was willing, be appointed, at a salary of 30s per week. The matter was deferred, pending A reply from the clerk. Drain Cleaned. Mr. Rea reported that he had giver instructions to have the drain near Mr. McKenzie's property cleaned out rf'MXn the motion of the chairman hi? nction was endorsed. Onflow Road Railway Crossing. With regard to the Onslow Poac' railway, Mr. Jones said he did nol know the intention.of the liailwa\ Department, whether it was going U erect an overhead bridge or leave th< present level crossing. He empha sised the dangers of level crossings and moved that the attention of th< Railway Department be drawn to th< existing danger at the Onslow Stree* level crossing, and that the Depart ment bo urged to erect an overhear bridge. j Mr. Rea seconded—Carried. I The advisability of having a turn stile at Averill Street was urged b' Mr. Rea. He pointed out the neces sity of having a turnstile at the ei.f" of the street abutting to the statioyard in order that pople residing i the centre of the township could usthe street to get to the station. Five applications, from persons r<Bident in Auckland, Waihi, Papakurand Wellington, were received for V position of nightsoil man und roar rr.an.
