FRANKLIN SUB-PROVINCIAL DISTRICT.

NEW 2EALAND FARMERS' UNION

The monthly meeting of tne Franklin Sub-Provincial District branch oi the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held at Pukekohe on Tuesday. June 8, 1920. Present: Messrs H. O. Mellsop (Kohekohe), in chair, W. Finlay (Mauku), L. L. Morgan (Pukekohe East), J. 0. Crouch (Otaua), John Schlaepfer (Pukekohe), C. W. Gifford (Waiau Pa), C. Hodgkinson (Glenbrook), and E. Piggott (Buckland). Various letter were dealt with, mostly concerning various matters and reports from the provincial office.

After considering the financial po sition it wos resolved to carry on as at present for *hree months and that meantime and effort be made to collect all members' subscriptions that are in arrears.

The rules of the proposed Dairymen's Union were considered. After discussion the followingMnotion was proposed by Mr. Mellsop and seconded by Mr.Piggott: "That we were svmpa hetic with -.he objects of the Dairymen's Union, but we urged members to insist on P. favourable agreement being made with the Farmers* Union as the parent body." This was carried unanimously. Mr. Mellsop reported that the Acclimatisation Society was advocating a gun license to replace the present came license. He felt such a license would be detrimental to farmers who kept two or three guns for the destruction of rabbits, and he thought we should oppose this suggestion. Mr. Morgan agreed with Mh Mellsop He considered that the Acclima- > tisation Society often intruded where it had no right to. It was of no benefit to farmers, vet spme time ago it had the audacity to suggest thac rabbit poisoning be , stopped because pheasants were also being destroyed by the poison. . After a lot of discussion it wa-, nronosed by Mr. Hodgkinson. seconded by Mr. Morgan, "That we protest against the suggested gun license proposed by tfce Acclimatisation Society, and that Mr. Mellsop be instructed to bring it up at the meeting of the Provincial Executive. It was decided to support the Franklin County Council in asking for an extra rabbit inspector to cope with the rabbit nuisance.
