DOG CLASSES AT THE FRANKLIN WINTER SHOW

JUDGE'S INTERESTING LETTER. The secretary of the Franklin A. and P. Society (Mp. D. K. Hamilton) has received the following letter from Mr. Walter G. Mason (Auckland), who acted as judge of end collies at the recent Winter Show:— -

Having officiated as judge at your lecent VVi ;ter Show, I feel that I must congratulate the executive and exhibitors on the excellent quality in the dog classes. The class for ' best in show," nom-

inated by a lady, was particularly good, in fact quite equal to similar classes in many metropolitan shows, the three dogs selected to fill the " places" being three of the best. The winner, Mr. Norman Wade's champion, "Hazelmere Levinside," is a well-known champion, and was : hown in the splendid condition for which Mr. Wade's exhibits are famous. His beautiful head, classical style, and condition placed him over Mr. Hardie's champion "Briar Bickford," shown full of life, but with coal in indifferent condition. Both are typical terriers.

Mr. Saulbrey's English Setter, 'Weeley Steadman," was third. Thi* is a young dog, imported bred, with a beautiful head, good bone and style, c.nd a "flag" seldom seen, even on the best of setters. A little mora age will make him a h.ird proposition, even for dogs of the calibre of first an 1 second. The .»thcr dogs in the class were all good specimens of their respective breeds, especially Mr E. Murrane's English Setter, 'Gibraltar," and Mr. Donnachie's Irish Terrier, "itane Mick," an imported dog. In the Irish Terrier Classes "Stan* Mick" easily won his "challenge," and thereby his right, 1 think, to the prefix "champion Stan*? Mick," this being the third time he has won the coveted "challenge." In the Smooth Fox Terriers, Mr. Wade's champion "HazeJmere Levinside" won open and New Zealandbred classes, beating Mr. Adams' "Aka Aka," nicely shown, the latter having hard luck meeting such a champion. Mr. Ingram carried off most of the prizes in the bitch classes, all his exhibits in splendid condilion. His well-known bitch, "Wahroonga Wakeful," was most successful. This exhibit is full of quality, correct size, and shows well. Mt. Wade also led out a nice young bitch. In Wire-haired Terries Mr. Hardie " sccoped the pool" with champion ' Briar Bickford" in dogs, and his bitch, " Briar Nancy," in the other sex. r ihe latter is typical, with correct coat, shows well, and won all ner classes. A really good brace of Wire-haired Terriers. Mr. Cumming's "Dusky Dash" has a nice head and eye, but lacks style and coat, and U.\ Righlon's "Jervois Junt". is a good young dog that may develop into a really good one, bat was shown at an awkward age. There were two Beardies (Collies) shewn. These were both intelligent in appearance, and bright of eye, but gave evidence of plenty of woik, not in coal for exhibition, and lacking that " grcou<ed " Appearance expected on the bench.

The Rough-coated Scotch Collies, Mr. V. S. Roberts led cut his two high-class dogs, " Kamo Sample," and ' Mosgiel Sample." The latter, who carries himself with proper Collie dignity, and shown in better coat than 'Kamo Sample," wcs placed first. "Kamo Sample" has a better head and ear carriage, out was out of coat, i-.nd carried himself too &aily; in fact, almost like a terrier. In the bitches, Mr. Starr's "Lady Evelyn" was the best of an even lot. A beautiful bitch with nice head, expression, correct style, and good coat, and in better show condition than the others. The Terriers and Co'.iies, briefly summed up, were a ; eally tip-top lot. I must thank the stewards and officials for the many courtesies shown to me, and congratulate the executive on their ver/ successful show.
