Business taking me through the Waikato district last week I had occasion to stop for a few hours at that thriving little township of Tuakau, just three miles from south oi Pukekohe. Being just about fifteen years since my last visit to Tuakau I could not help being struck with the progress this busy little centre has made. It; days gone by I left the South tram at a tiny station near where the New Zealand Dairy Association's fine butter factory now stands, and far from pleasant were my export ences of the main road. Last week I left the train at a smart, up-to-date station and parsed up a main street almost equal to Queen Street, Auckland. This and other improvements in well-kept footpaths, etc., leflerts great credit on the energetic local Town Board. In looking over the business places I remember on my last visit I see the old name of Tapper Bros, diapers, pioneers in their Uvde in Tua-1-au. Vastly different are their premises now to what I remember them years ago. Then a little frontage of nine feet and a depth of eighteen feet, and to-day. an up-to-date frontage of ninety feet of pinto glass ten feet high, covering a space th.it, I remember was occupied bv old cottages. Feeling in.ton-sted t e. teied inside, and where onru I found two brothers only I see a large stsff of smart assistants, n': busy in thenrespective d#pai tmeuti. In course of conversation I find that contracts have been ! . <ed for still further improvements co be made to the premises immediately. I was also shown through the most modern methods used in their liifdl order department (conducted Uy Mr. lapper personally), enwing every attention to patrons at .1 dhtarce. This, in conjunct''on with an ei.ormous stock, including many scarce commodities s»uon as colonial blankets, colonial f la«'ie!s, knitted etc., which at t'e present day any Queen Street firm would eiw, constitutes a shoj)ping cntre second t" none in the \Vaikato. On speaking of the difficulties of obtaining deliveries from the English market, I was shown a large consignment of British crockery just being unpacked. Practically 110 English crockery has reached New Zealand' for nearly two years, ard i ,ne Dominions have had to relj' solely or the inferior Japanese article. Sixteen months ago this consignment left the London warehouse to Messrs Tapper Bros.' order, and arrived in Tuakau last week. My time being short I was hastily shown the old original part, of the building. I found it hard to re "ail, as it is now occupied as a modern showroom, devoted to the sale of a'! the latest modes in smart millinery, underwear, costumes, -and babies' wear. Passing through the men's mercery and clothing departments on my way out, 1 noticed stocks of men's colonial underwear, men's boxed suits, boys' colonial twec-d suits and jerseys, and many other lines that any city business would be glad to have to-day. Keen buying, good service, a:>d highest value to their patrons is undoubtedly the progressive poiicy which has won for Messrs Tapper Bros, that measure of success which they deserve. While waiting for the evening train frqm Auckland, I saw drawn up at the railway station several smart taxi-cabs from the local garages waiting for home-coming pa s ugvrd. and I finally leave for the South thoroughly convinced that Tuakau is indeed progressing favourably. A happiness that is quite undisturbed becomes tiresome; we must have ups and downs. The difficulties thpjt are mingled with love .awaken passion and increase pleasure. -Molliere. •' • .
