TUAKAU TOWN DISTRICT.
To form a correct estimate of the rates (see report elsewhere) to he -truck by the Tuakau Town Board, one must 'take into consideration the following facts: In the first place. though the l 1 «d general rate is up to the !im*,t. it is in a sense, only equivalent to a 3-4 d rate, for the reasons that there are two special rates of >4<l each, and also Hospital and Charitable Aid rate of 7-25 d, or practically ' 4 cl. The Board would be acting quite within its powers by Striking special rates in all three cases, as other local bodies commonly do. However, the Board has, by including these three items in 'the general rate, studied the ratepayers' pockets by virtually keeping the genera} rate down to 3-4 d in the Kl, and also saving them the expense of declaring special rates. When it is borne in mind that the general rate has always been Pjd, and that wages and materials have risen anything from •100 to 200 per cent., thereby halving the amount of work that can be done for any stipulated sum of money, it must be admitted that the Boaid has managed the affairs of the Town district on economical lir.es. No doubt there is a lot more work to be done, and the \"'.000 yet left of the M 2,000 loan will be required, every penny of it, but for the time the Town District has been in'existence the ratepayers can say, munirip ally speaking, greater progress has been made in Tuakau than in met other places similarly situated.
