Jhe motion was carried. In accordance with notice of mof; tion given previously, Mr. Jones k c; moved that in order to relieve- the ; congestion in the traffic along Broadway the board open negotiations with the Methodist Church trustees for the purchase of a strip of land sufficient for the widening of the street. That in event of the said trustees declining to sell the board .uV!: e P s ,. under the. Provisions of the Public Worjugipfc acquire sufficient land for •'■wSp-.-'purpose. Mr. Rea seconded the motion oro forma! Mr. Jones said everyone'knew that X there was a congestion of traffic in jr Broadway. The time was approach K ing when the Methodist Church trus-i & tees would lease the land for bu;ld--3 ing sites. He contended that if the street was not widened now the ratepayers would be put to a considerable expense later on in taking the land and removing the buildings which were expected to be built thereon. In the interests of economy and of the district he thought tie time opportune for the boaroto take steps to have the street widened.
In answer to Mr. Rea. Mr. Jones said the street was now 66ft wide. Mr. Evans said he was opposoo to the motion, because he did not > consider there wiun congestion of V traffic. The trustees.- had taken stew to have the land cut up for business and office sites. If the board decider' to take the land the trustees would be put to extra expense in havinp the land re-surveved and subdivide. Mr. Jones said the trustees cou!r' be reimbursed for any extra expenditure entailed by nutting the expenses on to the selling price. The\ had nothing to lose, but would gain because the widening of the street would enhance the value of the property. Eventually the matter was defer red until ne\t meeting to allow of further particulars to be obtained. It was decided to .4iv« the footpath raised at Mr. Corric's to prevent water from flowing over thi road. It was agreed that the wort should not be commenced until sco ria was available.
