PUKEKOHE AND WATER CARRIAGE.
In connexion with the estate near Puni which is being subdivided for soldier settlement, we undei stand that plans for a new road extending to the Waikato River are in course of preparation. The intensive settlement of this estate opens up a possibility of supplying a service that Pukekohe has long been in need tl, namely, water-borne carriage of goods. If the road is put through, Fukekohe will then have vehicular access to the river, about five miles distant, and, provided the Waikato Shipping Company can be prevailed on to erect a landing at the settlement there is little doubt that benzine, oils, explosives and similar expensive railway freights may be avoided. At the present time thereis a steamer service, carrying such goods, direct from Sydney, via Port Waikato to Hamilton. The.re is no reason for why Pukekohe merchants should not join in, provided the -oad and landing projects materialise. Besides the goods abovementioned, it may be found feasible to import coal and export potatoes by river instead of by rail, and to work up a good traffic both ways. There is also the possibility of the road and landing affording an opportunity of creating a river holiday resort for Pukekone and the immediate vicinity. Just at present information on this matter is rather meagre, but we hope the possibilities will be kept in mind by our public men, and the most made of any opportunity of securing for Pukekohe the advantages of waterborne trade.
