A basket social was held in the Pokeno Hall on Fi-iday evening, April 9, in aid of the monument fund, and being favoured with a fine evening end a full attendance, proved a most successful function. The response from the ladies was loyal and generous, and merits great praise, resulting in an artistic display of tastefully-decorated baskets filled with good things, which, under the capable handling of Mr. Geo. Mclnnis, of Maramarua, returned the handsome sum of £67 to the credit of the monumental fund. The mystery basket, as usual, caused some curiosity and not a little amusement, as besides some very solid refreshment, it contained an outfit wiKch was evidently firtended to encourage the bachelors, one of whom Coated some diversion by the delivery of a stump speech and some witty sallies. Dancing was kept up sll morning, Messrs. R. Hayward and D. Gulland officiating as M.C's. Our thanks are specially due to the ladies and young men, mostly returned soldiers, for their united effort. A meed of praise is also due to the committee, whose organising of the function left nothing to be desired. MAUKU. FARMERS' UNION.
