LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

The "Times" is published to-day on account of to-morrow being Good Fridav. The next issue will be on Tuesday, as usual, and therefore no numbers will be omitted. No replace advertisements can be accepted loi next issue. Skaters are reminded the dates toi next week are Tuesday and Thursday Owing to Monday being a holiday'pictures will be shown on that night. _ . The Puni annual plain, fancy dress and masquerade ball will be held on Easter Monday night. A motor lorry will leave Pukekohe Post Office at 3 p.m. _ , Between July 7, 1919, and Februai7 1, 1920, the price of newsprint paper jumped from £32 10s to £7'j p<£ ton— it 'is still jumping. What is considered to be a record for Australia and New Zealand in the price of a bullock's hide wae obtained at a hide sale at Dunedin last week, when 30Hd per lb was paid for a single hide. The weight of the hide was 931b, and its value was £ll 16s 4d. We learned to-day that a farewell function was tendered last evening to the Rev. J. F. and Mrs. Martin, but as we were not aware that event was to take place, not having been informed of it by those responsible for the send-off, we are as yet unable to publish a report. We hope to obtain information for a future issue.

The charges for the screening of "False Faces" on to-moi'row evening will not be advanced, although the cost to the management is so great that they will do well to come out square. The current circuit programme! "Beauty and the Rogue, will be shown on Saturday. A special programme will be shown on Monday at usual prices. Pukekohe is not the only place where the attendance at public meetings never overtaxes the accommodation. A public meeting called at Taihape recently to discuss the soldiers' memorial scheme, and the proposed official welcome to returned soldiers, resulted in the attendance of the Mayor and a press reporter. A cat, which came in later, was not sufficient to form a quorum, and the meeting was abandoned. So far three similar meetings have lapsed says the Wanganui Herald.

"Fifty-five years ago we paid £2O for a cow at Onehunga, and butter was 3s per lb," said Mr. Harry Bilkev to a "Times" man, who asked him how present-day prices compared with those of pioneering days. The presence of the Imperial troops was partly responsible for these prices. Mr. Bilkey, whose sterling honesty, staunch character, and kindly, helpful disposition have made him "hail fellow well met" with everyone in the district, came out to New Zealand on the ship "Bombay," but his indifferent health prevented him attending the recent celebration at Bombay, which place is named after the ship. He could assure us, from memory, that the report in the "Times" was correct. There are only a very few left who are older than Mr. Bilkey. Next week he will be leaving Pukekohe Borough to rtsidj with his daughter, Mrs Stan Goldsworthy, of Glenbrook - Patumahoe district.
