DISTRICT NEWS.

PAPATOETOE. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FAIR, HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL. With the object of raising funds in aid of the new Presbyterian Church at Papatoetoe a grand autumn fair and sale of work was held in the Papatoetoe Hall yesterday afternoon and continued last evening. Fine weather prevailed, and a large attendance was present for the opening, which was performed by Mr. John Watson, chairman of the Papatoetoe Town Board, in the absence ; of the Prime Minister, the Right Hon 1 W. F. Massey, who promised to ats tend, but who was prevented i through illness. In the course ol a , brief address, Mr. Watson referred to the object of the sale of work, 1 and also to the sale of the original church, which was decided on to i make room for the proposed new structure. He made it known that it was 65 years since the first day School was held in the old church. Up to the present the congregation had collected £2300 towards the cost r-f the erection of the new building/ and he trusted that the required money would he forthcoming. He declared tho fair open, amidst applause. Upon entering the building. it was at once seen that the congregation was out to achieve an object. ■ Various stalls were erected louiid the interior walls, all of which were heavily laden with articles of all descriptions. The stalls were unique, I all being constructed in rustic work ' by 20 menfolk of the congregation, nil of whom worked assiduously. The flower stall, resembling in appearance a summer house in the centre of the hail, was conducted by Mrs Wallace and Misses CaiYuth and W Ross, The sweet stall was controlled by Misses Goodfellow, M. Wyllie, Watson and Weston; produce, Miss W. Wyllie and M. Caivuth; fancy work, Misses Hamilton, Ross and Jessie Wyllie; wonder tree, Misses Can-nth and Percy; plain work, Mrs Daizley and Miss A. Wyllie; Sunday school , stall, Mrs. Foster, M. Goodfellow, , and seven Sunday school girls; home industries, Mesdames Hunter, Wilson , and Miss M. Hamilton. The tea room was run by Mesdames A. Hall, McCullough, Campbell, Newton King, , Best, Coles, Galloway, Misses Watson, Taylor. Potter (2) and a number of others.
